Insomnia
Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which you have a trouble falling and or staying asleep. The condition can be short term, acute or can last a long time – chronic. It may also come and go in phases. Primary insomnia means your sleep problems are not linked to any other health condition or problem. Secondary insomnia means you have trouble sleeping because of a health condition like a depression, arthritis or heartburn.
Insomnia causes and risk factors:
- Long term illness
- Mental health issues like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder ADHD
- High blood pressure
- Obesity
- Trouble focusing
- Daytime sleepiness
- Negative thinking
- Emotional vulnerability
- Work schedule
- Poor sleep habits
- Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol consumption
- Medications
- Sleep related disorders
Women and older people are at higher risk of insomnia. A good night’s sleep helps foster both mental and emotional health.
